The autumn of 2023 marked the tenth anniversary of The Badlands Collective showing prints of overlooked, underscreened movies, and to mark this special occasion, we did something a little different.

We’ve long been fans of the Prince Charles Cinema’s Mystery Movies strand, where a wildcard film selection is presented with no hints as to what the film in question might be. It’s such an exciting way to experience an evening’s entertainment and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to curate one of these screenings.

Our selection turned out to be John Sayles’s brilliant neo-Western Lone Star (1996), but before the film was projected onto the screen, all we told people ahead of time was that it was a film we loved, that had unjustly and mysteriously drifted into obscurity since its release, that is currently out-of-print on DVD and has so far never been issued on Blu-ray, and that we were presenting it on a rare 35mm print.
